Benbrook, Texas

The city of Benbrook happens to be in Texas’s 12th congressional district. A suburb of Fort Worth, Benbrook located southwest of the Tarrant County. With an estimated population of 22,948 as at 2016, Benbrook is a place that is welcoming to live. The city with an entire area of 12.2 square miles has Benbrook Dam which formed the body of water called Benbrook Lake. Benbrook Dam was constructed and completed in the year 1952 by the U.S Army Corps of Engineers.

Benbrook was incorporated as a village in the year 1947. Two years after, it had the sale of beer and liquor and also had its citizen vote to make taverns illegal. An attempt was made through voting to make sales of alcohol for Off-Premise consumption legal, but it suffered a setback due to lack of sufficient votes. Eventually, sales for off-premises sales consumption was made legal through votes in 1971 but had every other form of sales illegal.

A notable figure in the history of Benbrook is Ed Sproles, the first Mayor of Benbrook. An accomplished personality, Sproles was a successful businessman, a cattle rancher and president of Texas Motor Truck Transport Company. He served Benbrook in various capacities as a public servant. His house on Sproles Drive played host to Benbrook City Council Meetings in the early days. The building was restored in recently by Mayor Dettrich, and the building was also relocated 300 feet eastward in 2008 by Mayor Dittrich to give way for an intersection of 377 and Sproles drive. The move to perverse the house by restoring and moving it made Mayor Dittrich and his wife win the Historic Preservation Council Tarrant County Pedestal Award in 1996.

The leading employer in Benbrook is Wal-Mart followed by Weatherford International, Ltd Oil & Gas. Other top employers include Western Hills High School, Weatherford International Ltd Drilling, Benbrook Community Center / YMCA, Renaissance Park, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store and City of Benbrook among others.

The public schools in Benbrook are under the administration of Fort Worth Independent School District IDS. There are two elementary schools in Benbrook, Benbrook Elementary, and Westpark Elementary Schools. Other public schools include Benbrook Middle-High School and Western Hills High School. A number of students in Benbrook school at nearby Waverly Park Elementary and Ridglea Hills Elementary in Fort Worth.

New schools were founded in Benbrook. As a result, a negative trend of people leaving Benbrook due to schools located too far away. This reality was first brought to the fore in 1995 during the campaign of Jerry Dittrich, a member of the City Council. Schools were sometimes as far as 15 miles away, and this led to the establishment of new schools in the city. The city has witnessed the opening of schools such as Benbrook Middle opened in August 2011, and Westpark Elementary began in August 2016 with some still under construction while some will also undergo conversion from elementary to middle schools and middle school to combined middle and high school.
