Ridglea Hills and Ridglea West make the Ridglea area, which is about six miles west of the Fort Worth’s Central Business District. The area is carved from about 8 surveys, and the most substantial part is from the 1880 Albert Rusk Survey while other surveys include 1889 Walter Houston Survey and 1850 Allen Beard Survey.
Early settlers included the A.C Luther, his brother J.T Luther, M.E Berney, Elizabeth Brants and Mrs. Olive Seybold. A.C Luther acquired three miles of pasture land when he moved to Fort Worth from Tennessee. He bought each acre for $400 and his brother J.T Luther later joined him together with Earl Wilson to form Luther Bros. & Wilson Inc. M. E Berney established a gold course in 1935, charging 50 cents for playing 18 holes.
Luther Bros. & Wilson established more residential areas by acquiring more lands and by 1952, the company dissolved and L.T Luther and Wilson started Ridglea Construction Company. The company constructed commercial buildings mostly around Camp Bowie Blvd.
One of the notable points in Ridglea area in the 1950’s happens to be Western Hills Hotel. The place witnessed lots of high school graduation parties and had people of all ages flock the area. This lasted until I-30 was built and it drew the crowd away from Western Hills Hotel. The Western Hill Hotel, Hank Green sold the hotel as a result of the sudden downturn and established Green Oaks Inn around where I-30 was because of the shift of traffic to the area.
Ridglea Country club was established in 1954 by the joint effort of A.C Luther and Hank Green. The country club had its first event which was the wedding reception of Ted Klein and Wini Lyle in January 1955. To make a more extensive Boulevard to lead to its front gates, A.C Luther had to buy back three houses that were earlier built and sold by his company and had it demolished to pave the way for the boulevard.
One major attraction of the Ridglea area is the Luther Lake. It has its peak of visitors during Christmas season when it makes beautiful scenery of light’s reflection of water. The neighborhood is made up of curving streets, trees and rolling hills that has some steep. Style of home prominent is the ranch style single storey brick home. Another significant feature in Ridglea area is the Clayton road, a street that circled the entire area.
Ridglea area has a neighborhood association named Westside Neighborhood Association. The association sorted the address zoning problem of the area. It also serves to address issues such as crime and maintains the beatification of the area. It is also responsible for food bank collections
Ridglea area has elementary, middle and high school all present if the area. Elementary schools present include Mary Louise Phillips, Ridglea Hills, and Luella Merrett elementary schools. The only middle school present is Wm. Monnig. High schools include Arlington Heights and Western Hills high schools.
