The history of Arlington can be traced back to the days of European settlers in 1840. It got the name Arlington after General Edward H. Tarrant battled with Native Americans located in the Village Creek settlement. This led to the set up of a trading post at Marrow Bone Spring, and this is the place remained as Arlington. Tarrant County was named in honor of General Tarrant. Marrow Bone Spring was renamed Arlington after its establishment in 1876.

Arlington was notable for its fertile soil, and these attracted farmers whose activities turned the place to an agricultural hub, with cotton-ginning and farming centre present. As early as 1910, the city already had amenities such as electricity, water, telephone and natural gas. The development the city came with a population explosion that went on for decades. With just a population of 7,692 in 1950, Arlington TX had grown to 374,000 by 2011 making one of the fastest growing cities.

The industrialization of Arlington as witnessed by the arrival of General Motors assembly plant and aerospace development were significant contributions to the population boom witnessed by the city. The city’s economy under its mayor, Tom Vandergrift who served between 1951 and 1977 witnessed an all-time growth.

Arlington is notable for sports hosting some sporting events. The largest student community in Arlington is found in the University of Texas with about 40,000. The school and its students are pivotal to the economy of the city. UTA boast of some of the oldest buildings in Dallas and Texas such as The Arlington High School, Ransom Hall, College Hall, Preston Hall and Brazo House.

Primary and secondary schools are under five independent school district; Grand Prairie ISD, Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD, Arlington ISD, Mansfield ISD and Kennedale ISD. These districts are not in particular bounded by county boundaries or city boundaries.
